Black Russian Terrier History

There are many conflicting views on exactly what breeds make up the Black Russian Terrier.   Depending on which information you read. From what we have been informed from Russian breeders is that the main breeds are the Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Airedale Terrier and the Newfoundland. 17 other breeds were also been incorporated to a lesser extent.

The bread as it is today was formed under the leadership Of Col. G Medvedev of the Central Military School of working dogs. The characteristics that they wanted to achieve were a large unpretentious, very trainable dog that could handle varying climatic conditions in Russia.

Although the breed has been around in one form or another for many years it was not until 1981 that the Black Russian Terrier was recognised by the authorities as a breed of its own.

Our observations show that standards vary from country to country and one Russian can look very different from another. If you have seen our dogs you will be aware that Ivan has a very different look to Roxa. Ivan is more of a stocky Rotty look where as Roxa has thrown more to the Newfoundland.

Most people think they are a Giant Schnauzer at first  glance€.
